This Indian Desi Pub Raita recipe is a cooling yogurt-based side dish that blends fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, herbs, and spices. Ideal for pairing with spicy Indian dishes, this raita is quick to prepare and brings a refreshing, creamy element to your meal, making it the perfect addition to an Indian pub-style feast.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 English cucumber, finely grated and excess water squeezed out
  • 1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely minced (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

Instructions
 

  • In a large bowl, whisk the Greek yogurt until smooth.
  • Add the grated cucumber, chopped red onion, mint leaves, cilantro, and green chili (if using) to the yogurt.
  • Sprinkle in the cumin powder, coriander powder, salt, and black pepper.
  • Add the lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil.
  • Gently mix all ingredients until well combined.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
  • Before serving, give the raita a quick stir and garnish with a sprinkle of cumin powder and a few mint leaves if desired.
  • Serve chilled as a side dish with spicy curries, biryanis, or as a dip for naan bread or poppadoms.

Notes

Raita is dish servied with curries, mixed grills, naans, vegetarian food and is mainly used to help accompany the dish but also cool down the spicy flavours used in Indian cooking.
