Ingredients

  • 2 ciabatta rolls (about 200 grams each)
  • 200 grams deli ham, thinly sliced
  • 150 grams fontina cheese, sliced
  • 30 grams Mayonnaise
  • 10 grams Dijon mustard
  • 20 grams butter, softened
  • Optional: fresh arugula or spinach leaves for added freshness

Instructions

  •  Prepare the Bread. Slice the ciabatta rolls in half horizontally.
  • Spread a thin layer of Mayonnaise on both sides of the bread.
  • Spread Dijon mustard on one side of each roll for added flavor.
  • Assemble the Sandwich: Layer slices of fontina cheese on the bottom half of each ciabatta roll.
  • Add the sliced ham on top of the cheese.
  • Optionally, add a layer of fresh arugula or spinach leaves for extra flavor and texture.
  • Top with more slices of fontina cheese, then place the top half of the ciabatta roll on the sandwich.
  • Grill the Sandwich: Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium heat.
  • Spread softened butter on the outside of each ciabatta roll to help achieve a golden, crispy crust.
  • Place the sandwiches in the skillet and press down gently with a spatula.
  • Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  • Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them cool slightly. Slice each sandwich in half and serve warm.

Notes

Variations

  1. Ham and Swiss Cheese:
    • Substitute the fontina cheese with Swiss cheese for a classic flavor combination. This pairing works well with the savory ham.

  2. Add Fresh Herbs:
    • Incorporate fresh herbs like basiloregano, or thyme into the sandwich for added flavor. You can mix them into the mayonnaise or sprinkle them directly onto the ham.
  3. Spicy Mustard:
  4. Vegetable Additions:
    • Add slices of tomatocucumber, or avocado for freshness and crunch. Spinach or arugula can also be included for a nutritious boost.
  5. Different Cheeses:
    • Experiment with other cheeses such as provolonecheddar, or goat cheese for different flavor profiles. Each cheese will bring its unique taste to the sandwich.
  6. Panini Style:
    • Grill the ciabatta sandwich in a panini press for a crispy exterior and melted interior. This method enhances the flavors and textures.
  7. Croque Monsieur Style:
    • Make it a Croque Monsieur by adding a layer of béchamel sauce on top of the ham and cheese before grilling. This adds creaminess and richness.
  8. Sweet and Savory:
    • Add a layer of fig jam or honey inside the sandwich for a sweet contrast to the salty ham and cheese. This combination adds depth and complexity.
  9. Smoked Ham:
    • Use smoked ham instead of regular deli ham for a deeper, more robust flavor that pairs well with the cheese.
  10. Olive Tapenade:
    • Spread a thin layer of olive tapenade on the ciabatta for a Mediterranean twist. This adds a burst of flavor and pairs well with the ham and cheese.
