Ssamjang (Korean Dipping Sauce)

Ingredients
  

  • 60g doenjang (Korean fermented soybean paste)
  • 30g gochujang (Korean red chili paste)
  • 30g toasted sesame oil
  • 10g honey
  • 10g toasted sesame seeds
  • 3g minced garlic (about 1 clove)
  • 10g onion, thinly sliced
  • 20g walnuts, chopped (optional)
  • 10g apple, cored and cut into small pieces (optional)
  • Garnish (optional): Green onion, thinly sliced
  • Minced green chilies
  • Additional toasted sesame seeds

Method
 

  1. In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients: doenjang, gochujang, sesame oil, honey, sesame seeds, minced garlic, and sliced onion.
  2. If using, add the chopped walnuts and diced apple.
  3. Mix all ingredients thoroughly until well combined and smooth. This should take about 1 minute.
  4. Transfer the sauce to a serving bowl.
  5. If desired, garnish with sliced green onion, minced green chilies, and additional sesame seeds.
  6. Serve immediately as a dipping sauce for Korean barbecue, vegetables, or lettuce wraps.
  7. Storage:Store unused ssamjang in an airtight container in the refrigerator. For food safety, consume within 3-5 days, though it may last up to 1-2 weeks when properly stored.
