Ingredients
Method
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F).
- Prepare the Puff Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface to smooth out any creases.
- Place the pastry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Using a sharp knife, score a 1 cm border around the edge of the pastry, being careful not to cut all the way through.
- Prick the center area with a fork to prevent it from puffing up too much.
- Assemble the Tart: Brush the border of the pastry with the beaten egg to give it a nice golden color when baked.
- In a bowl, mix together the mozzarella, cheddar, parmesan, and feta cheeses.
- Evenly spread the cheese mixture over the center of the pastry, staying within the scored border.
- Sprinkle the thyme leaves and green onions over the cheese.
- Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and melted.
- Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before slicing.
- Serve warm as an appetizer or alongside a fresh salad for a complete meal.
Notes
Variations
- Four Cheese Tart:
- Use a combination of mozzarella, cheddar, parmesan, and feta cheese for a rich and flavorful tart. Add fresh herbs like thyme and green onions for extra flavor.
- Cheese and Tomato Tart:
- Top the cheese mixture with slices of ripe tomatoes and drizzle with olive oil. This variation adds a fresh and juicy element to the tart. Finish with a sprinkle of parmesan and pesto before serving.
- Potato and Cheese Tart:
- Layer thinly sliced baby potatoes on top of the cheese mixture and spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the pastry before adding the cheese. This creates a hearty and savory tart.
- Mini Cheese Tartlets:
- Instead of a large tart, use a mini muffin tin to create bite-sized cheese tartlets. Fill each pastry shell with a mixture of cheddar, Gruyère, and cream, making them perfect for appetizers.
- Spinach and Cheese Tart:
- Add sautéed spinach to the cheese mixture for a nutritious twist. This variation pairs well with ricotta or goat cheese for a creamy texture.
- Herbed Cheese Tart:
- Incorporate fresh herbs such as basil, parsley, or chives into the cheese mixture for added flavor. This variation enhances the freshness of the tart.
- Bacon and Cheese Tart:
- Mix in crispy bacon bits with the cheese for a savory and indulgent option. The salty flavor of the bacon complements the cheeses beautifully.
- Caramelized Onion and Cheese Tart:
- Add caramelized onions to the cheese mixture for a sweet and savory flavor combination. This variation works well with a mix of sharp and mild cheeses.
- Mushroom and Cheese Tart:
- Sautéed mushrooms can be added to the cheese filling for an earthy flavor. Pair with Gruyère or fontina cheese for a delicious combination.
- Sweet and Savory Tart:
- For a unique twist, add a layer of fig jam or red jam under the cheese mixture. This adds a sweet contrast to the savory cheese and pastry.
