Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Servings: 8 slices
Course: Side Dish

Ingredients

For the Dough:
  • 500 grams bread flour
  • 10 grams salt
  • 7 grams instant yeast
  • 300 ml warm water
  • 30 grams unsalted butter, melted
  • 10 grams sugar
For the Cheese Filling:
  • 200 grams sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 50 grams Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried herbs (such as thyme or oregano, optional)

Equipment

  • Loaf Pan Usage Many cheese bread recipes suggest using a loaf pan (e.g., a 9x5 inch loaf pan) for baking. This helps the bread maintain its shape and ensures even baking throughout the loaf
  • Alternative Baking Methods Some recipes mention that you can bake the bread on a baking sheet or in a Dutch oven, but these methods may yield different textures or shapes compared to using a loaf pan
  • Flexibility:  While a loaf pan is ideal, if you don't have one, you can still bake the bread on a baking sheet, but it may spread out more and not have the same height or structure as when baked in a pan.

Method

Prepare the Dough
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread flour, salt, and sugar.
  2. Add the instant yeast to the warm water and let it sit for a minute to dissolve.
  3. Pour the yeast mixture and melted butter into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
 Prepare the Cheese Filling
  1. In a bowl, combine the grated cheddar and Parmesan cheeses.
  2. Add the garlic powder and dried herbs if using, and mix well.
Assemble the Bread
  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
  2. Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1 cm thick.
  3. Spread the cheese mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  4. Roll the dough up tightly from the long side, like a jelly roll, and pinch the seams to seal.
 Shape and Bake
  1. Place the rolled dough seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  2. Cover with a cloth and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Serve
  1. Allow the bread to cool slightly on a wire rack before slicing.
  2. Serve warm to enjoy the melted cheese inside.

Notes

Variations

  1. Different Cheeses:
    • Experiment with different types of cheese such as mozzarella, gouda, or blue cheese for a unique flavor profile. Combining cheeses like cheddar and mozzarella can offer a gooey texture.
  2. Herb Infusion:
    • Add fresh or dried herbs such as rosemary, thyme, or basil to the dough or cheese filling to enhance the flavor. A sprinkle of garlic powder or onion powder can also add depth.
  3. Spicy Kick:
    • Incorporate diced jalapeños or a pinch of red pepper flakes into the cheese filling for a spicy version of the bread.
  4. Stuffed with Vegetables:
    • Add sautéed vegetables like spinach, mushrooms, or sun-dried tomatoes to the cheese filling for a more substantial and nutritious loaf.
  5. Bacon or Ham Addition:
    • Include cooked and crumbled bacon or diced ham in the cheese mixture for a savory, meaty twist.
  6. Sweet and Savory:
    • For a sweet and savory combination, add a touch of honey or maple syrup to the cheese filling, or sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar before baking.
  7. Nutty Crunch:
    • Add chopped nuts such as walnuts or pecans to the filling for a crunchy texture and nutty flavor.
  8. Whole Wheat or Multigrain:
    • Substitute part of the bread flour with whole wheat or multigrain flour for a healthier version with more fiber.
  9. Stuffed Rolls:
    • Instead of making a loaf, divide the dough into smaller portions to create individual cheese-stuffed rolls or buns.
  10. Herb Butter Glaze:
    • Brush the top of the bread with a mixture of melted butter and herbs before baking for a flavorful crust.
